How do I get a clean installation of Java on my Mac?

Why would I need to do this?

If your version of Java is corrupted or is preventing you from installing a more recent version of Java, you should try the steps below to allow you to update your Java.

And if you are having trouble with your client not loading, which may be due to having incompatible or multiple versions of Java, these steps should remove all versions of Java to allow you to just install the latest version.

How would I do this?

  1. Click on the Finder icon on your icon bar:
  2. Open the Utilities folder. You can quickly open this from Finder using the key combination;
    • Command + Shift + 'U'
  3. Double-click on the "Terminal" icon
  4. In the Terminal window Copy and Paste the commands below:
    • sudo rm -fr /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin
    • sudo rm -fr /Library/PreferencePanes/JavaControlPanel.prefpane
  5. This will remove these files, and should allow you to download a fresh version of Java.
  6. Visit the Java website
  7. Click the "Free Java Download" button
  8. Accept the License Agreement (at your discretion)
  9. Save the installer
  10. Then, once it has been downloaded, run the installer
  11. Once installed, restart your computer
