How do I allocate more RAM to the RuneScape Client on Mac OS X?

Why would I need to do this?

if you find that RuneScape is stuttering or running slowly when you launch the game, increasing the amount of RAM allocated to the RuneScape Client improves the Client's performance and increases stability. All you need to do is edit the RuneScape.PRM file, this may sound a bit complicated, but follow the steps below and you'll have it done in no time!

How do I do this?

  • Open the terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
  • Type in the following command (This command assumes that the official RuneScape client is located in your Applications folder):

/Applications/ /Applications/ &

  • This will open the file containing all the Java settings for the client.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the file and you should see something like this:

< key >VMOptions.ppc< / key >
< string >-Xmx256m< / string >
< key >VMOptions.i386
< string -Xmx256m< / string >
< key >VMOptions.x86_64< / key >
< string >-Xmx256m< / string >

  • Locate the -Xmx256m parameter
  • Replace it with -Xmx512m
  • Save the file and restart the client.

Note: If you get a error saying you do not have permission to edit the file, please move the runescape.prm file to your documents folder, complete the edit there and move the file back to its original location

I've completed the edit, what now?

Please now launch RuneScape and enjoy the improved stability and performance! If you're still experiencing performance issues after following the above steps please see this list of more solutions for performance and stability issues.
