Client Error Messages on Windows

This page shows the most common client errors that players get in touch with our Tech Team about, and their solutions.

Messages when downloading

The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program

Occasionally some players may see the error message "The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program". If you see this message, please choose a new web browser on your computer and try to download the client again. For example, if you're using Google Chrome and see the error message above try opening (or installing) the Firefox browser and use that to download the client instead.

A heap has been corrupted

If you're receiving the error message 'A heap has been corrupted' – especially while downloading / installing the RuneScape client, then please follow these steps:

  1. Restart your computer
  2. Using a browser that you haven't already tried to download client with, such as Google Chrome, Internet Explorer or Firefox head to the downloads page.
  3. Right click on the golden download button and click 'Save Link As' and save the installer directly from your desktop and run it from there.

Messages when crashing

Error Code c0000409

This error message is known, and our developers are working on getting a solution to you soon!

The issue is most likely to happen in busy areas, and compatibility mode can also help reduce crash rate. If you have been seeing this issue, you may want to use the Java client (found in the ‘Other Ways to Play’ section on our Downloads page) for any risky activity in the meantime.
