The Vulkan beta is currently available for testing for Windows only. This article contains useful information on how to opt in and out of the Beta, troubleshooting guidance and known issues.
How do I opt in to the Beta?
Through the Jagex Launcher client:
- Open the RuneScape client
- While the client is loading, select the settings icon
in the bottom left
- Next to 'Graphics mode', select 'Vulkan (Beta)'
If you would like to opt-out the Beta, please set this to 'Open GL'.
Through the Steam client:
- Right-click 'RuneScape' in your games library
- Select 'Properties'
- Select 'Game Versions & Betas'
- Select 'Vulkan'
If you would like to opt-out the Beta, please set this to 'Default Public Version'.
How do I report an issue with the Beta?
As this is a Beta, you may encounter unexpected graphical or client behaviour while we continue to improve the Vulkan Beta. That said, you can either report an issue via our Vulkan Beta bug report form in the Official RS Discord server here or click 'Talk to us' at the bottom of this page to get in touch and we'll make sure this is passed on to the team.
I received a "The RuneScape client suffered from an error" message
If you see this error pop-up, it may indicate that you need to update your graphics drivers. Please update them if they are out of date. If you're unsure on how to do this, guidance can be found via our support article here. Once you have done this, restart the client.
If the error persists, please opt out of the beta and see whether the changing to 'OpenGL' helps to resolve the issue.
I'm unable to swap back to OpenGL via the Jagex Launcher
If you are experiencing an issue and you are unable to launch the RuneScape client through the Jagex Launcher, you can manually change the renderer by editing the preferences file.
To do this:
- Open 'File Explorer'
- Copy and paste the following into the address bar:
C:\ProgramData\Jagex\launcher\preferences.cfg - Open the 'preferences.cfg' in a text editor, such as Notepad
- Find and edit
renderer=vulkantorenderer=opengl - Save the file and close the text editor.
- Relaunch the RuneScape client through the Jagex Launcher
