Two-step authentication adds an extra layer of protection to your Jagex account by requiring you to enter a security code each time you log in. You can choose to receive these codes by email (default) or via a dedicated authenticator app like Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator.
You must have at least one of these options enabled at all times and can manage these via your account management.
Security codes via authenticator
- Log in to your account management
- Under Two-step Authentication toggle the setting for Security codes via authenticator app
- Follow the on screen prompts
- Make sure to save your backup codes in a safe place
If you lose access to your backup codes, we're unable to remove two-step authentication and you will have to create a new Jagex account. Jagex cannot remove two-step authentication or issue new backup codes.
Enabling this method will not automatically disable security codes via email, but you can disable this setting if you wish to do so at any time.
Security codes via email
Enabled by default but deactivated when enabling security codes via authenticator, you can re-enable this setting at any time.
- Log in to your account management
- Under Two-step authentication toggle the setting for Security codes via email
- Follow the on screen prompts
If someone else gains access to your email account they might also be able to log in to your Jagex account. So make sure you've followed our security tips to secure your email account.
Syncing your authenticator app codes to the cloud
Many popular authenticator apps allow you to sync your codes to the cloud. This feature lets you recover your information on a new device, helping you avoid getting locked out if you lose access to the original device.
Got a new device?
If you synced your codes to the cloud using one of the apps above, simply install the app on your new device and log in with the same account. Your codes should appear automatically, allowing you to regain access seamlessly.
Backup Codes
When setting up two-step authentication via an authenticator app you'll be asked to save a set of 10 backup codes in case you lose access to your authenticator device. These codes are meant to temporarily log in to change account settings without compromising your account's security.
If you can't remember where you saved these codes try searching your device for "Jagex - Backup Codes.txt".
Note:
- Backup codes are only available if security codes via authenticator is enabled
- Each backup code can only be used once
- Entering a backup code will bypass the two-step authentication and give full access to your account, so store your codes securely and don't share them with anyone
- A set of replacement codes can be generated as long as you already have access to your account
- Disabling then enabling a new authenticator app will also generate a new set of backup codes
Use a backup code to log in
If you've lost access to your authenticator app, use a backup code to log in.
- Log in to your Jagex Account as normal
- When asked to verify, select Use one of your account's backup codes
- Enter the code and follow the on-screen prompts
Select Use one of your account's backup codes.
Generate a new set of backup codes
You can generate a new set if you've misplaced or run out of backup codes.
- Log in to your Jagex Account
- Under Two-step authentication select Replace next to Backup Codes
- Save your new backup codes to a safe place
Generating a new set of backup codes will disable any previous sets.
